Fever Patrol

Road like burnt black snake on charcoal
through Mescal heart starting at high noon
and driving fast past hillside pointing
Spiney cactus to the relentlesssun dry bed aroyos
turning powder in the wind dry Indians with
red eyes American children caught on
The edge of a shady deal right around
the next bend on Federal Hiway 195
out of Oaxaca and into the hills,
Black cat fever patrol by day and by
night, holed up sweating in dimlit cantina
flies laying eggs on my food.
